The Right to be called God’s Child

Our identity defines us. The labels we wear impact our behavior and dictate how we are treated. What comes to mind when you hear someone identified as homeless, successful, smart, or disabled? Immediately, we see an image of those descriptive words. We all wear labels. The question is, which label defines us?

Over my lifetime, I’ve received countless labels. Some are situational, like daughter, student, wife, and mother. Others are based on other people’s opinions, like unattractive, stylish, smart, and awkward. These descriptions may fit, but they do not equal our identity. We can choose to reject the narratives others write about us.

Only God determines our true identification.

Through our faith in Jesus, he gives us the right to our proper identity as children of God. I’m so thankful we aren’t dependent on other people to reunite us with our family name.

Accept the title of “Child of God” through your relationship with Jesus and recognize your victory today! This name is given to us by God’s grace! God does not identify us as victims. He sees us as victors freed by Jesus to live out our true place in His Kingdom.

It does not matter what we have done. It does not matter what has been done to us. We belong to God’s family. The actions of others cannot take that title away from any of us.

Read John 1:12 (NLT) “But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.”

Many of us have experienced victimization in various forms. Moving through the realization of pain and the restoration of our mind, soul, and body takes time and perseverance. Jesus invites you into wholeness through an unadulterated relationship with Him. He will restore you to your rightful place.

The Message Bible sums it up beautifully. “But whoever did want him, who believe he was who he claimed and would do what he said, He made them to be their true selves, their child-of-God selves” (John 1:12 MSG). All the lies heaped on you through circumstances and hurtful people are washed away. You are not what they said. You are who God says you are, and He has given you the right to be your true self. He washed away all your bad choices and restored you to him.

Your confidence is rooted in this identity. You can stand before anyone, anywhere, and declare your worth and family tree. You, too, belong in the lineage of Jesus, adopted into the family of God.
