Spur: 2019 Word of the Year

on Tuesday, 01 January 2019. Posted in Devotionals

Moving forward no matter our circumstance.

2019 wasn’t supposed to start this way. At least that is what I thought. Last year, much of what I did, what God cultivated was in preparation for this year. At least that is what I thought. It wasn't a planned goal more like a subconscious thought. Can you relate? Funny how today's Scipture verse on You Version Bible App is Proverbs 16:9 "We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps."

In September, while away on retreat, the Lord was clear. 2 Timothy 1:6-7 were my Scripture verses for 2019.

2 Timothy 1:6-7 (NLT) 6 This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual  gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

“Fan into flames” burst off the page of my Bible. As I read and studied I knew the Lord was calling me to be bold, not timid, as verse 7 encouraged. Do this with power, love and discipline. So exciting! So freeing to be empowered to boldly move forward in God’s direction.

Instead, on January 1st, it feels like I am starting from behind. I broke my foot, MY RIGHT FOOT, just after Thanksgiving. Everything takes longer. I can’t drive. I can’t walk. I know, I know it is temporary – inconvenient – I will recover. For now I have to slow down and be patient. Neither of which I do well. Hmm there lies the self-discipline. God is funny how He prepares us.

What do we do when life takes us on an unexpected twist? How are we to be obedient when life spins in a new direction?

  1. Look for God. He is there. He didn’t cause the pain but He is there with comfort and direction.
  2. Do not fear. God’s perfect love drives it out. Let Him. He WILL provide a way.
  3. No matter our individual circumstance, God’s power is there. He can do the impossible. Will we let Him? Will we cooperate with Him? We must trust Him in the process.
  4. God’s love is inexhaustible. It does not end. It does not give up it is ever present. It is not dependent on what we do or don’t do. We simply are to accept it.

True I am not running into 2019. I’m not evening limping. I’m rolling on my scooter to fan the flames of the gifts God has placed in me and I encourage you to do the same. My word for 2019 is spur. Spur: a thing that prompts or encourages someone; an incentive. How about you? What is God calling you to do? Join us on our Facebook page for further discussion.
