I want to nurture the fruit of self-control. Ugh, it is so hard especially with those closest to me. Why is that the ones most dear to us are the most likely to be hurt? Is it because we feel safest with them? Maybe it is just because we are around them more? My confession? I yelled at my daughter because the dog ate a sandwich left on the table. I wasn’t loud or even mean; I just wanted to blame someone. My guard was down so I lashed out.
1 Corinthians 10:12-13 reminds us to be on guard. Honestly, we can’t resist temptation on our own. That is why Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit. It is a powerful promise to hold onto. God will always give us a way out. Still sometimes we miss it.
What’s a girl to do? She asks for forgiveness from God and her loved one. Last night, I snuggled with my teen daughter and asked her for her forgiveness. “No problem, Mom” was her response. Long ago she recognized my imperfection. She knows I am working to do things right but I will never be perfect.
This is a lesson we each need to acknowledge. We cannot be perfect. We need to stop trying. However we are called to be righteous. A perfect person doesn’t make a mistake. A righteous person determines to do what is right. Of course we fail, but then the right thing to do is ask forgiveness. Give yourself grace and determine to do the right thing in the future.
